History of Tiki Village
Tiki Village Mobile Home Park ("Tiki") is a 55 age and over community comprised of 205 mobile home sites and 14 travel trailer lots located within the city of Tavares, Florida on the Dora Canal. For over 30 years, Tiki residents have enjoyed a peaceful, serene living environment on their homesites adjacent to the Dora Canal bordered by natural woodlands owned by the county that has been preserved for generations in virtually its original appearance. It is not unusual for Tiki residents to almost always catch a glimpse of an alligator, turtle, great blue heron, as well as that of many other birds and species. The Dora Canal, lined with stately moss draped cypress trees standing in still dark waters, presents a picture of natural beauty that has given the Canal the reputation as "one of the most beautiful waterways in the State". The approximate one mile waterway connects two of the larger lakes in Lake County, Dora and Eustis, enabling a Tiki boater to cruise through a chain of lakes and canals to Silver Springs, or Jacksonville, and out to the Atlantic Ocean. In 1965, Howard Ehler and his brother purchased 40 acres of raw land and soon began development of the property digging a lake and canals. Subsequently, water/sewer lines, streets, a clubhouse, office, card room, laundry rooms and storage/maintenance sheds were added. During the early stages of development a concerted effort was made to preserve the natural beauty of the park as the mobile home sites were established. It was in the beginning stages of development that Mr. Ehler's brother elected to sell his share of ownership to H.B. Holloway, in which the two families ownership partnership continues to exist today. The final development phase of Tiki was completed in the mid-1980's. Since that time, it has been the owner's priority and commitment for Tiki to maintain its natural beauty and to continue to make improvements to the grounds and facilities to allow the park to maintain its unique charm and tranquil living conditions.
